The Rock Mountain Music Experience

(RM) was created by a number of

university academics and music artists

who devised and taught a university

course known as 'Rocking the World -

The Politics of Popular Music'.
Listen To RM Radio

From this lecture series grew the idea of creating a website devoted to the social,

political and historical impact of 'Western  Popular' music (heavily focused on Rock

music), commonly known as Pop, on Western society.

The Objective Of Rock Mountain

Western Popular Music, or 'Pop', has been a powerful force spreading Western values

(sometimes called 'western cultural imperialism') globally. It has been a powerful

political tool, socialising political cultures - both intentionally and unintentionally.

The most powerful popular music since the 1950s, arguably, has been Rock `n’ Roll

and its variants. It is this dominant form of Pop that Rock Mountain is devoted to in

terms of creating an educational and entertainment, 'edutainment'-driven, internet-

based historical and political music experience.

RM is devoted to exploring the historical, cultural, social and political impact of

popular music on Western and global society. It also seeks to expose the inherently

political nature of popular music, how it has been used over time by different political

powers, and how it has emerged as both an implicit and explicit tool of historical and

political processes and thereby has become a significant tool of social and political

change.

Through its 'mass production' also known as 'commodification' popular music, or 'Pop',

by its very existence reflects Western political culture.  It therefore has an implicit

cultural and political power and acts as a tool for Westernisation/globalisation of the

world. In other words, it sells the West to the rest of the world.  But Pop also can

exhibit explicit forms of social and political action where various artists attempt to

pursue their own political agendas through music and influence change - and have

succeeded in doing so. In fact if you examine both the implicit and explicit messages

in Pop, it is possible to identify various political themes which have impacted

enormously on our world over the last half century.

Therefore this website is NOT an encyclopedia of Western popular music. It is devoted

instead to the history of this music and its social, cultural and political impact on our

global community. It thus provides a journey through life and time, measured by music

and major historical and political events.

RM is also dedicated to teaching and informing the special role music has in

signposting events of our lives and measuring our memories. Through its parent

company, Politics International, RM thereby also offers 'Rocking The World' a

university level course for teaching about the role Pop music has in both influencing

and being influenced by major political, historical and cultural events.

A Note About Copyright

While Rock Mountain is entertainment/education ('edutainment' or 'info-tainment')

driven, it is above all an education provider offering university taught courses to

educational institutions and the general public. It therefore infringes no Copyright

Laws. The written content of this site is heavily based on academic research undertaken

by RM researchers and academic sources and many scholars from a number of fields

(Sources). The audio visual educational content of this site is provided by much of

RM's own material but is also heavily reliant on material freely and readily available to

the public on the web, especially YouTube. In all cases, RM does not, nor does it seek

to, exploit freely available material on the internet. Instead such material provides an

important educational role in helping to illustrate the educational experience in history,

politics and popular culture that Rock Mountain offers. In so doing, RM offers such

providers exclusive exposure and free publicity. Rock Mountain's services are also free

to the public however membership in the Rock Mountain Club allows members to have

their own webpage within the site to use as they wish plus eventually many more

benefits.
